Unquestionably enchanting and the second issue in this superb series, following 2011’s Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, the Niue 2012 Raising of the Cross 2oz Silver Proof has just arrived at ECI.
A dramatic example of the capacity of modern minting, this superb legal tender triptych is a fitting tribute to one of Germany’s most esteemed seventeenth century painters, Peter Paul Rubens. A renowned Flemish Baroque artist, the Raising of the Cross was created in 1609 - 1610 as part of the high alter of St Walburgis Church in Antwerp, Belgium.
Recreating Rubens epic artwork, this unique presentation comprises three full-colour legal tender coins struck to Proof perfection from a total of 2oz of Sterling Silver. The central coin, measuring 35mm x 35mm, illustrates the strength of two men trying to elevate the cross under the seemingly unbearable weight of Christ. United with two 17.5mm x 35mm legal tender coins, the left panel depicts a group of spectators weeping at the feet of Christ. Conversely, the right panel portrays the brutality of the Roman soldiers with two other criminals also facing crucifixion. A breathtaking tribute to one of Rubens’ fi nest creations, each coin is housed within the plush confines
of a freestanding, foldout timber case completed with an information booklet.
